First Student Workers in New Hampshire Join Teamsters Union
WASHINGTON, April 21 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — First Student drivers and monitors responsible for safely transporting school children in the Portsmouth, New Hampshire area recently voted to join Teamsters Local 633 in Manchester.”The union movement within First Student is alive and well in New Hampshire,” said David W. Laughton, Secretary-Treasurer of Teamsters Joint Council 10 and Local 633. “It is our goal to raise public awareness, that the people who are responsible for transporting our most precious cargo, our children, are in dire need of improvements in their working conditions, and the Teamsters can help.”According to Roger Travers, an organizer with Joint Council 10, the workers united to achieve improvements in their workplace, including fair wages, affordable health care and respect on the job. The 40 drivers and monitors work out of Portsmouth, Rochester and Somersworth, New Hampshire and Acton, Maine.”I am proud of the organizing committee and the job they did in holding it all together,” Travers said. “These new Teamsters are anxious to get to the bargaining table and start reaping the benefits of their new found strength.”Contract proposals are currently being scheduled under the direction of Local 633.Founded in 1903, the Teamsters Union represents more than 1.4 million hardworking men and women in the United States and Canada.
